Colheita Port, Garrafeira Particular
Tasting Notes:
Michael Broadbent
Pale tawny indicating many, possibly 50 years, in wood; slightly varnishy on the nose but still sweet and delicious. 4 / 5 (4-2001)
Vivino: It is not every day that I have an opportunity to taste wine of this Calibre. I am almost humbled at the thought. The cork was bad but intact. I had to strain the contents due to cork bits. The wine was brown almost like prune juice. The aroma was pungent, as if opening the bottle released a genie! Thick and viscous. The taste sensation of plum persimmon and poached pear. Apricot too? Senses on overload. Help!!! I am drowning in love for this. And I may never taste this again. Sad. Larry Mogelonsky (Vivino)
For the Love of Port: From Quinta de Loureiro, a colheita from 1871 although the date is not permitted on the label by the IVDP. Bottled about 35-40 years ago. (45-50)
Deep brown in color, opaque, and slightly soupy. Huge nose, full of rancio, and very clearly a barrel-aged colheita. Strongly acidic, mild coffee flavors over the top of concentrated lime and grape juice. A big, acidic aftertaste, leaving dry cheeks and a rancio impression. Lingering dry grapefruit finish. 86/100.
Two days later this had benefitted from the extra air contact. The nose had become elegant, with a good grapefruit focus. On the palate this was full of sweet brown sugar and bitter grapefruit, delivering a big palate presence. Good structure and shows well. Warm, burnt sugar aftertaste and long grapefruit/lemon peel finish. A very good showing. 90/100. 13-Jun-12. Decanted 2 days.
