For a significant portion of the 20th century, Macallan primarily contributed its malt to blended whiskies. It wasn't until a market downturn in the 1980s that the distillery shifted its focus towards promoting its single malt. This change aligned perfectly with a growing appreciation for the high-quality releases that Macallan had previously licensed to Campbell, Hope & King, and Gordon & MacPhail during the 1960s and 1970s, now among the most coveted collectibles in the market. Although Speyside neighbors Glenfiddich and Glenlivet lead in global single malt sales, Macallan has become the most desired brand. This demand led to the inauguration of a new distillery in 2018, a marvel of underground architecture on the Easter Elchies estate, equipped with 36 copper pot stills.
Among the rarities is the Macallan 1949 Signatory Vintage 40 Year Old, an exceptional release from Signatory Vintage. Given its alcohol content is below 40%, it wouldn't be classified as a single malt by today's standards. This whisky was distilled in 1949 and matured for 40 years in casks #852 and #855.
Signatory Vintage, founded in 1988 by Andrew Symington, stands as one of Scotland's leading independent bottlers. The company operates its offices and bottling plant adjacent to the Edradour distillery, which has been under its ownership since 2002.
